Understanding Fabric Blends
The fabric composition of your apparel directly impacts how it feels, how it performs, and how much it costs. For wholesale buyers placing OEM orders, understanding the trade-offs between cotton and polyester blends is essential for making informed sourcing decisions.
100% Cotton
Pros: Softest hand feel, most breathable, hypoallergenic. Cons: Higher shrinkage rate (3–5%), wrinkles easily, fades faster, higher cost. Best for: Premium basics, baby wear, and eco-conscious brands.
70/30 Cotton-Polyester (Most Popular)
This is the sweet spot for most apparel categories. The cotton provides softness and breathability while the polyester adds durability, shape retention, and resistance to shrinkage and wrinkles. Shrinkage drops to under 2%, and the fabric holds its color and shape through many more wash cycles.
60/40 and 50/50 Blends
Higher polyester ratios reduce cost and increase durability further, but at the expense of breathability and soft hand feel. These blends work well for activewear, workwear, and price-sensitive markets.
Our Recommendation
For hoodies and sweatshirts targeting the US and European markets, we recommend the 70/30 cotton-polyester blend at 300–400gsm. This provides the premium feel consumers expect while maintaining excellent durability and easy care properties.
